President's Message - April 2016
Well folks, winter is behind us as we’ve made it to spring! This month I’m officially halfway through my Presidency for the 2015 – 2016 year. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished so far this year and I’m looking forward to finishing out my term on a high note. Please reach out to our officers and/or committee chairs to see how you can be part of making this year a success! I want to remind you that this year’s signature event for the Dallas Branch will be the Annual ASCE DFW Joint Meeting in Arlington on July 11, 2016. Over the years this meeting has continued to grow as it provides members from both the Dallas and Fort Worth Branches the opportunity to network with fellow members across the Metroplex, listen to great speakers and topics, and earn up to 5 PDHs. Each Institute will once again provide three 1-hour technical sessions in the morning, followed by the luncheon with a keynote speaker, and an ethics seminar given by David Howell, P.E., with TBPE to wrap up the day. Please stay tuned for more information to be published regarding speakers and topics. I look forward to seeing everyone there as we make this the biggest year yet! The Branch still needs your help with the following: Sponsorship: We are in our final push for 2016 sponsorships. Please consider supporting your local ASCE Branch with your financial contribution! If you haven’t renewed your website and newsletter sponsorship, please contact Phillip Packer, Fundraising Chair, ASAP so your company’s logo remains on the website. If you have any questions please contact Phillip at [email protected]. Scholarships: We are still looking for applications for our G.B. Mann Scholarship. The scholarship is available to the local high schoolers within our area. If you know any qualified high schoolers who are interested in pursuing a career in Civil Engineering, please encourage them to apply here on our website or contacting Hossein Hosseiny at [email protected]. As a Board update, Lesley Brooks has resigned from her position as Branch Director and moving to California with her family. I’d like to thank Lesley for her dedication to the Dallas Branch over the years as she will be greatly missed. Although we are sad to see her leave, please help me wish her and her family the best of luck as she moves out west! Good luck Lesley! The Board will nominate and vote on her replacement during our April Board meeting. I hope you can join us at our next meeting on Monday, April 11, 2016. Our speaker will be Stephen L. Salin, AICP, Vice President Capital Planning, Growth & Regional Development with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) where the meeting topic will be “DART Update”. Before and after the lunch, the Institutes will once again have Technical Sessions providing a great opportunity to earn up to three (3) PDHs each month. I look forward to seeing you there! In closing, I’d like to wish both SMU and UTA Student Chapters the best of luck at the Texas Mexico Student Symposium!
