President's Message - February 2013

Howdy!! I want to thank all the volunteers who gave up most of their Saturday a few weekends ago to be judges for the Future Cities Competition held at UTA. If you have not had the opportunity to be a judge in this competition, please consider doing so next year. It is truly mind blowing to see what these kids can come up with. A lot of these kids may go on to become civil engineers because of the experiences they have in Future Cities. This is one of the best ways to mold and shape our future engineers. Big thanks also to Cissy Sylo for organizing and promoting this activity for many years. If you missed out on this judging opportunity, there are two more chances to volunteer with upcoming MathCounts competitions.

We had a great presentation last month with Gail Hicks, P.E. from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers speaking about the Fort Worth Central City Project along the Trinity River. This month we have a topic and speaker that goes along with our monthly Centennial Theme of Student Mentoring. Kyndra Johnson will be talking to us about the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) program in the Lancaster ISD. We also have an excellent opportunity after the lunch program to meet Dario Sanchez (UTA Student chapter steel bridge captain) and Dr. Jim Williams (UTA Professor and a member of the ASCE Committee for Student Members). They will be showing us the Steel Bridge UTA student constructed for the Steel Bridge Competition last month in El Paso. Thank you to our monthly meeting sponsor Halff Associates, Inc.

I was able to attend the first big kick off event for the Centennial Celebration at the Texas Section Infrastructure Report Card Event & Day at the Capitol. It was my first time in the State Capitol Building and I was amazed how accessible our legislators were. They really seemed to take the time to read and understand the infrastructure report carddeveloped by the Texas Section. Afterwards at the reception, I was able to sit down over a “beverage” and discuss numerous issues with Rep. Bill Callegari, P.E. and Rep. Wayne Smith, P.E.

The next monthly centennial webinar is set for February 12 at noon. The title of this webinar is “Discovering STEM Volunteer Opportunities”. We have also been working on obtaining Centennial Proclamations from many of our local Dallas area cities and counties. Take a look at the proclamations we have received so far.

The Communication Committee has set up social media sites for our members to get updates and information from the Dallas Branch. The winner of the $100 gift card is Julie Ann Griffin who was a randomly selected Dallas Branch Member who liked our Facebook page before Feb 1st.
Other activities we think our members would be interested in include the Engineers Week Award Luncheon on Feb 21, a volunteer opportunity during Engineers Week at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science on Feb 22 andthe 2013 DFW ASCE Golf Tournament on April 29 at Tour 18 in Flower Mound. And don’t forget registration will be open soon for the upcoming Spring Centennial Conference in Corpus Christi.
I hope to see all of you at our branch meeting on February 11.
