President's Message - October 2018
My last meeting as President is coming up! Cliché or not, time does indeed fly when you’re having fun. Now is a good time to reflect. Is the Dallas Branch fulfilling its mission? Has this organization continued to improve since its founding in 1924? Perhaps a more relevant question I may help answer, is the Branch improving on our watch? How may we measure such improvement? The breadth and depth of our initiatives for the greater good of our profession and community speak loudly to that point. Everyone in leadership has multiple commitments to work, family and even other organizations. Despite other demands on their time, the dedication of our board and committee leaders to perform their Branch duties with passion and energy goes on unabated. Everyone’s paid jobs and family commitments have grown in recent years as we’ve been blessed with an uptick in public demand and appreciation for Civil Engineers. Our jobs are more challenging and rewarding than ever! Our Branch’s mission is to play a positive role to make sure that trend continues. I believe we fulfill our mission well while providing our young and young-at-heart leaders a valuable opportunity to engage in fulfilling roles which will one day become some of their fondest career memories. A triple win for the profession, our community and for our own betterment! Our Branch’s value shone brightly with honors bestowed upon Dallas Branch membership at CECON 2018. At the banquet on Thursday (9/20) in San Marcos, every awardee reflected with pride and satisfied contentment on their service to ASCE and the friendships that have grown out of their labor of love. With the unanimous endorsement of your board, Nancy Cline earned the prestigious Award of Honor. Also please join me in congratulating our own Sean Merrell for the well-deserved and apropos Professional Service Award and to Jack Furlong for adding the Lifetime Service Award to his amazing record of well-deserved recognitions. Join me on Monday October 8th at our next meeting when Nancy Cline will join us as Region 6 Director to install our 2018-2019 leadership team. Well…. that’s it for my last President’s message. I hope you agree that I’ve kept them pithy and to the point! I’m looking forward to reading Anthony Luce’s monthly missives over the coming months. My heartfelt appreciation goes to the board, committee leaders and all members for lending me the privilege to serve as your Branch President this year. It’s been a great ride that’s not quite over yet as I’ll still be hangin’ around fulfilling my duties as Past President. Yours in service to ASCE, Mark Boyd, PE
President
