Topic: Geotechnical Engineering and Geological Engineering of the Golden Age of Texas Dam Building

Speaker: James F. Phipps, P.E.

James F Phipps

James Phipps serves as the Vice President and Principal Engineer at Henley-Johnston & Associates, Inc. in Dallas, Texas.  Since the firm’s establishment over 65 years ago as Mason-Johnston, over 17,000 projects have been completed in the North Texas and surrounding areas. James directs the geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing operations of the firm.  Some recent major projects include the American Airlines Trinity Campus, Bleu Ciel (30 story condominium with 5 levels below grade construction), 505 West 5th (47 story tower with 60-foot-deep excavation), Dallas Zoo Rhino/Hippo Exhibit, and the Dallas Convention Center Hotel (Omni).  James is a Dallas native and holds both a Masters and Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas and has over 20 years of professional consulting experience.

Speaker: Zuming Xia, Ph.D, P.E.

Zuming Xia

Zuming Xia, Ph.D., P.E., is a branch engineer of Structural Technologies VSL’s Dallas office. Xia received his MS from Southeast University in China in 1988 and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2002. Xia is a voting member of ACI 301 E and the joint committee ACI-ASCE-423 “Prestressed Concrete”; Xia is an associate member of ACI Committee 362 “Parking Structures”. Xia is a committee member of PTI DC-20 Building Design and an associate committee member of PTI M-55 Grouting and PTI M50/ASBI Bonded Tendon Joint Task Group. Xia has worked on post tensioning system development and testing, segment bridges, stay cable bridges and heavy lifting.
