Brad

As we move on into June, I want to wish everyone a safe and happy summer. I hope everyone had a fantastic Memorial Day weekend.

I am sorry to have missed our May meeting, but I hear that Jonathan Brower and the rest of the Younger Members (YM) did a fantastic job running our Board Meeting and the Luncheon. Yes, May was YM month which provides us the opportunity to allow our up and coming leaders the opportunity to develop skills that will serve them well in leading ASCE and in their professional careers.  Thank you to Jonathan and the rest of the YM volunteers for their hard work and commitment to ASCE.

At our May luncheon we also recognized the Dallas Branch’s 2017 Life Members. A Life Member is an individual who has made a lifetime commitment to ASCE and the civil engineering profession by remaining a member for the full length of their professional career. To our newest and current Life Members, I offer a heartfelt thank you for your lifelong commitment to ASCE, without members like yourselves, our organization would not be capable of what we are today.

Continuing an exciting tradition, we also welcomed students from the Woodrow Wilson High School Civil Engineering Club to our meeting. We are ecstatic to honor the CE Club’s top students again this year. CE Club has become one of the Dallas Branch’s most powerful STEM outreach activity. If you are interested in contributing you time to this great cause, please let Jonathan Brower know.  During the school year, the Club is always looking for guest speakers and exciting project site visits.

Our Branch has several BIG events coming up in June and July:

(1) the Dallas premiere of Dream Big: Engineering Our World, an IMAX® Film, on June 3rd at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. All are welcome to attend, and tickets will be $8 at the Museum, or $7 on the website. The American Society of Civil Engineers Dallas Branch, in partnership with the National Society of Black Engineers DFW Professionals are hosting an all-day event to engage pre-college students interested in STEM careers, as well as students already enrolled in engineering programs in college.  This event provides us the opportunity to fulfill one of our core missions: promoting interest in STEM careers to all students.  Throughout the day, our organizations will offer hands-on engineering activities, and red carpet photo opportunities.  Following the film we will host a question & answer session with practicing engineers from the area.

(2) The Dallas – Fort Worth ASCE Joint Meeting will be held July 17, at the Arlington Hilton, as usual. Be on the lookout for more details in the coming weeks. As usual, you do not want to miss this fantastic opportunity to earn up to 5 PDHs, and catch up on your ethics requirements.

Please join us at our next Meeting, June 12th. Our speaker is scheduled to be T.C. Broadnax, City Manager, from the City of Dallas to dicuss his vision for the City of Dallas. Before and after the lunch, the Institutes will once again have Technical Sessions providing a great opportunity to earn up to three (3) PDHs each month.
