ASCE – DISD Partnership: Bridge Building Competition 2017

As you may have heard previously, ASCE Dallas branch has partnered with Dallas Independent School District to organize and co-host a Bridge Building Competition for all of the DISD schools.   The Bridge Building Competition occurs all over the world, and this is the first time for Dallas to host one.

The construction and testing of model bridges promotes the study and application of fundamental principles of physics and also helps students develop “hands on” skills through bridge construction. By participating in the Bridge Building Competition, students get a flavor of what it is to be an Engineer, designing structures to a set of specifications and then seeing them perform their function.  They are also provided with an academically-oriented extracurricular activity which is recognized school-wide.

The DISD Preliminary Bridge Building Competition took place on Saturday, December 3rd.  We had a really great turnout of teams with really enthusiastic students looking for ways to improve their bridges after they reached failure due to weight application.

The final Bridge Building Competition with take place at the DISD STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Expo Day on Saturday, February 4, 2017 from 8am until 4pm.  ASCE Dallas is looking for volunteers to judge various stages of the competition, and to sit at the ASCE booth to represent the organization and interact with students and their families and discuss what engineers do, how to become an engineer, and so on.
