President's Message - July 2015

Hello Dallas Branch! Hope you are enjoying the beginning of summer! Last month we celebrated the life long careers of 13 individuals who became our most recent ASCE Life Members. We also witnessed the career beginnings of two scholarship award recipients entering into civil engineering programs. Lastly, we enjoyed quite possibly the only time I’ve ever seen civil engineers doing the YMCA. That was a sight to behold!

First, I’d like to update you on some Board business. We are pleased to let you know we will continue to meet at the Crowne Plaza Dallas Galleria-Addison through 2016. We have renewed our contract with no rate changes to you. What we have learned, however, from this renewal process is that many hotels (including the Crown Plaza) are still raising rates for meals and charging for parking. We will be looking into different options in the following year on how to minimize the cost to our Branch and to our members. We’ll keep you informed.

The month of July marks two things for us at ASCE Dallas. Celebration of our country’s independence this July 4th and the freedoms we enjoy. The second, more locally, is celebrating our close partnership with Fort Worth Branch. We will be having the annual Dallas – Fort Worth Joint Meeting on July 20th at the Hilton Arlington. Fort Worth Branch is offering at our Joint Meeting a half day of technical sessions and luncheon program. Take a look at the Meeting information— Fort Worth has put together an interesting slate of speakers and topics for your continuing education.

We are excited to share with you that newly elected Mayor Jeff Williams, also a fellow civil engineer, will be the keynote speaker during the luncheon program. Come join us as we enjoy the camaraderie we have with our fellow engineers in Fort Worth and earn a few PDHs at the morning technical seminars.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Angela Matthews, P.E.
