Earth Day 2015

ASCE Dallas once again participated in Earth Day Texas at Fair Park. We had an outdoor booth on Saturday and Sunday of the festival and had a great time sharing our love for the civil engineering profession and passing out ASCE promotional materials. Our booth featured a “Build-Your-Own Water Filter” activity as well as a water tower tank demonstration. The water filter challenge gave our booth visitors the opportunity to design a filter out of cotton balls, paper towels, sponges, cotton swabs, sand, activated carbon, and coffee filters to clean water that was “contaminated” with potting soil, glitter, beans, and pieces of paper.

Bernoulli’s equation and water pressure were also demonstrated with the use of a small tank of water and various sizes of plastic tubing where the outlet was held at varying elevations. The hope was to give the general public and young students a greater appreciation for what civil engineers do to move and treat the water they use every day!
