President's Message - June 2015

Posted by admin on 05/25/2015 12:00 am  /   President's Message

Hello Civil Engineering colleagues! The month of May was another reminder of why civil engineering is so important to the community. The regular rain and thunderstorms have taken North Texas from drought to flooding in a matter of weeks. Drainage, levees, rivers, soils, streets, etc have been impacted. As the rain is pouring and as others duck inside, many in our industry are headed in the opposite direction to check our project sites and looking at our own neighborhoods. Some are checking to see if the erosion control measures are working, did the rain expose more I/I issues, did the storm sewer system help recede the water quickly enough…. Were you one of those folks?

YOUNGER MEMBER LEADERS. Last month was a great showcase of the incredible leadership developing within ASCE. I’m very proud of how each Younger Member officer and chair stepped up to lead the Board meeting, Branch meeting, CE Club day, and Golf Tournament. Fantastic job to Fabian Herrera, Ashlyn Kelbly, Morris Layton, Julie Jones, Alexis Clark, Jonathan Brower, and Jennifer Roath!

A BIG THANK YOU! We had an incredible showing of support from players and companies alike at the 2015 Golf Tournament. Our sponsoring companies gave generously and for our event day fundraising, hundreds of dollars were spent on the mulligans, strings, Dixon driving contest, and raffle tickets. The heat, humidity, and mosquitoes couldn’t keep our players from enjoying their time on the Brookhaven course – some teams even hit scores in the 50s! Many volunteers were involved to help set up and provide support along the course.
We’ll share with the membership soon on the proceeds that will ultimately go to the ASCE Dallas Scholarship (GB Mann) fund. Thank you all for participating, sponsoring, and helping out!!

JUNE 8th MEETING. This month we have a couple of special announcements in recognizing accomplished individuals.
• We’ll be recognizing ASCE Life Members at the Branch luncheon. We have 13 members this year that have qualified for this prestigious level.
• At this meeting, we’ll be also presenting the GB Mann Scholarships to two very deserving high school graduates entering college in the fall.
Please join us for a program presentation from speaker, Enrique Guillen on the NTTA Chisholm Trail Parkway project!

Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting!

Angela Matthews, P.E.
