October 2014 - President's Message

Posted by admin on 09/29/2014 12:00 am  /   President's Message

I started last month’s message by stating how hard it is believe that the summer has already come and gone.  As I write my final President’s Message, I am feeling the same sentiment.  It has been my pleasure and honor to serve the Dallas Branch of ASCE this past year.  We have one of the strongest and most active Branches in the state and even the nation, and this year has been no exception.  I want to take this opportunity to highlight our Branch’s activities over this past year and thank everyone who has volunteered their time to participate.  Activities include:

• Awarded 3 scholarships to well-deserving students
• Received a national award for our website
• Rolled out a new website
• Began holding two technical sessions at each meeting instead of one
• Completed the Habitat for Humanity Centennial House
• Hosted a half-day Dallas/Fort Worth Joint Meeting with multiple tracks of technical sessions and an Ethics seminar
• Participated in Future City Competition, Mathcounts, and many other educational outreach programs
• Civil Engineering Club at Woodrow Wilson High School
• Hosted a Younger Member month, in which the monthly luncheon was led by the Younger Members
• Several Younger Member events hosted in conjunction with other professional organizations across the metroplex
• Engaged the SMU and UTA student chapters

In my opening President’s Message, I encouraged and challenged every member to participate in as many activities as possible this year so that we could get the second century of ASCE in Texas off on the right foot, and our members certainly rose to that challenge!  Thank you all again for allowing me to serve as your President during this busy and exciting time for the Branch!

We are excited to hear from JD Granger with TRVA on the Trinity River Vision Project Overview.  A lot of exciting things are going on with this project, so this is sure to be a very interesting presentation.  After the main presentation, we will be swearing in our new officers as well.  And, of course, we will be having two technical sessions as always.  Refer to the newsletter for the topics and times.

See you October 6, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza Dallas!
