EWRI July Technical Seminars

Posted by admin on 06/17/2014 12:00 am  /   Technical Session

Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) Technical Seminar Topics & Speakers for the Dallas / Fort Worth Joint Meeting

Time: 9:00am - 9:50am

Topic: Basic Pump Hydraulics - We will cover basic centrifugal pump hydraulics including how pumps work, volute and diffuser pump types, hydraulic terms, impeller designs, pump performance curves, and operating range.

Speaker: Granger Smith, P.E. with Smith Pump Company, Inc.

Mr. Smith is the President and CEO of Smith Pump Company, Inc. He has over 32 years of experience in the pump business in new pump application and existing bad actor pump problems. He received his mechanical engineering degree from Texas A&M in 1978 and he’s a registered professional engineer in Texas.

Time: 10:00am  - 10:50am

Topic: Advanced Pump Hydraulics - After Basic Pump Hydraulics, we will introduce advanced terms like specific speed, NPSH, cavitation, and recirculation. This will lead to pump application by introducing pump operating range and the affinity laws. Finally, we can consider pumps in various applications when we introduce the combination of pump curves with system head curves.

Speaker: Granger Smith, P.E. with Smith Pump Company, Inc.

 Time: 11:00am - 11:50am

Topic: Pipeline Condition Assessment - With advances in technologies and structural assessment of pipe, utilities and municipalities can utilize state of the art inspection technologies and assessment methodologies to obtain “actionable information” that allows for identifying, locating and correcting localized distress on critical buried pipelines. This presentation will present a phased approach (with case study references) to applying the available technologies and engineering methodologies to assess the condition of critical pipelines, including water mains and wastewater force mains. Deploying the “right” technology will also be addressed, as pipeline risk (likelihood and consequence of failure), available budget, and logistical constraints (i.e., pipeline accessibility), combined with sound engineering judgment, also factor into the assessment.

Speaker: Dave Kurtz, P.E. with Pure Technologies Ltd.

Mr. Dave Kurtz is a registered engineer in Texas with more than 30 years of experience in engineering and construction, including pipe manufacturing and condition assessment of pipelines.
