President's Message - June 2014

Posted by admin on 06/02/2014 12:00 am  /   Announcement, President's Message

I’d like to start off this month’s newsletter by saying a big ‘thank you’ to all of the Younger Members who volunteered to help run our May meeting for Younger Member Month.  You were a great examples to the high school and college students in attendance of the contributions that young professionals can make in this organization.  After the meeting, I also saw several of our younger members in the audience visiting with the students, sharing their experiences as a civil engineer, and offering to be a resource for that student in the future should they ever have any questions or need any help.  Thank you all for your hard work and dedication, and your willingness to help the next generation of civil engineers as they enter our profession.  The future is looking bright for the Dallas Branch!

This month, we will be recognizing our new Life Members.  For those of you who do not know, a Life Member is an individual who has made a lifetime commitment to ASCE and the civil engineering profession by remaining members for the full length of their professional career (at least 35 years).  We are honored to have several new life members from the Dallas branch this year.  Please help us congratulate them all on this significant achievement at this month’s luncheon.  To them and all of our other Life Members, thank you for your continued service to the Dallas Branch throughout the years.  You have made a significant impact on this organization, and your devotion to the Branch is very much appreciated by us all.

We are excited to hear from Bill Brown with the City of Arlington on the Greening a Grey System, LID Practices in Arlington.  More information on this month’s technical seminars can be found in this month’s newsletter.

Please mark your calendars for July 14, 2014, which is when the ASCE Dallas/Fort Worth joint meeting will take place.  The Dallas Branch is hosting this year, and we have an extended program planned.  We will be offering concurrent technical sessions in the morning, followed by the luncheon, and then an ethics seminar following the luncheon.  A detailed program will be available online soon.

There is one more thing that I would like to mention to our members before closing.  This is the time of year where we are working to negotiate a new contract with a hotel for our monthly meeting space.  The Marriott has been a great location for us for the past several years, but they are proposing some new rates that are significantly higher than what they are currently.  We are talking with several other hotels in the area to make sure that we are able to continue to meet our members expectations for the luncheons at a fair price.  Stay tuned for more details.

See you June 9, 2014 at the Addison Marriott!
