Reflecting Back on 2010, and Looking Ahead to the New Year…

I would like to start the January President’s Message with some great news. Since our last meeting, we learned that the ASCE Dallas Branch  received three tremendous ASCE National Awards for performance over the last fiscal year. We were notified by ASCE National that the Branch received the 1) 2010 Outstanding Large Section and Branch Award, 2) 2010 Outstanding Section and Branch Web Site Award, and 3) Honorable Mention for the 2010 Section and Branch Diversity Award. This is truly a remarkable accomplishment for the Branch!

The recognition for these awards goes to the 2009 – 2010 Dallas Branch Board of Directors and to Rachel Hayden, Immediate Past President, in particular, for assembling an outstanding team, and then having the foresight to “raise the bar” and seek out these achievements. I also would like to acknowledge Ed Penton, Communications Committee Chair, and Sean Merrell, Vice-President, for leading the efforts to set up the ASCE Dallas Branch Web Site – These efforts led to the Web Site Award. Monica Malone, Newsletter Editor, and Phillip Alcorn, Webmaster, were added to the Communications team this year to continue expanding and improving the graphic content of our web site. Congratulations to the Dallas Branch Members as a whole for supporting these efforts - we could not do any of this without members who get involved and attend our meetings to enhance the profession and community in which we live. Read more about these awards in our Newsletter.
*** ALL WE NEED IS YOU! ***

* New Year * New Location * New Day * - Come and check out the new facilities at the first Branch meeting of the year on January 10th at the Dallas/Addison Marriott Quorum Hotel. Our guest speaker will be Mr. Ruben Delgado, P.E., Collin County Director of Engineering, who will bring news about engineering projects and events coming up in Collin County.

ASCE Membership Day – The January Branch Meeting has been designated as “ASCE Membership Day”. Please invite someone from your office or a colleague, who is not currently an ASCE member, to come with you to the meeting to learn more about ASCE.  We encourage all engineers, young and old, to get more involved and support ASCE and other professional organizations.  We will be providing incentives to bring a non-member to the January meeting – Read more details about this on the Branch Web Site.

Kathy Caldwell, ASCE National President, “Looks at what’s Ahead in 2011 for Civil Engineers” - Please review the article written by Kathy Caldwell on the Dallas Branch Website. It outlines many important issues that civil engineers will face in the coming year, and the need to MOVE the profession forward through good practices and programs like “Sustainability”.

Upcoming Events & Volunteering - The Branch is communicating upcoming ASCE events through the Branch Web Site and Newsletter, along with the date and a detailed description of each event. Many of these events need volunteers from the Dallas Branch to be successful. Please peruse these events and volunteer a little of your time to help with at least one event.  Volunteer sign-up sheets will be available for each event, or e-mail a board member about your willingness to serve.

Board Goals & Operating Budget – Each member of the Board of Directors has established goals for the upcoming year. This includes preparing a line item budget of income and expenses needed to fund Branch programs. The 2010 – 2011 Board Goals and Operating Budget will be available on the Branch Web Site following the January Branch Meeting.
