Younger Members Take Over the Dallas Branch!

Well, sort of… For the May Branch Meeting, the Younger Member Group will run both the Branch and Board of Directors’ meetings.  As your President, I look forward to taking a back seat at the upcoming meetings, and letting the Younger Members run the show!  We have a lot of great leaders within our Younger Member Group at the Dallas Branch, as well as at all levels of the organization.  We need to do everything we can to challenge our young people to let their voices be heard in all matters – they bring a fresh perspective to the issues facing us at the local, regional and national level!

On June 13, the Fort Worth Branch will host the ASCE Joint Meeting between the Dallas and Fort Worth Branches this year.  I have been in contact with the Fort Worth Branch leaders, and they have organized a great speaker, location and venue for the meeting.  Please show your support for both our Younger Member Group, and the Fort Worth Branch by attending the upcoming Branch Meetings - you won’t want to miss these great events!

In the President’s Message last month, I highlighted many of the goals the Board of Directors set at the beginning of the year, and where we stand on accomplishing them.  One goal I personally set was to increase Branch awareness about how ASCE operates, from the National level down to Branch level.  I originally thought I would do this at the Branch meetings, but we have been so busy this year that it has been difficult to handle this in addition to our heavy slate of announcements, recognitions, gift-giveaways, speakers, and still cover all business within the hour.  Therefore, I thought I would use the President’s Message this month to help achieve this.

1.     ASCE National has 7 officers, 5 directors and 16 staff members that provide leadership for the organization. The ASCE World Headquarters houses most of this, along with administrative staff, and is located in Reston, Virginia.

2.     TheSociety has over 140,700 members in many different membership classifications.

3.     ASCE has 8 Institutes at the National level, focused on specific technical areas within the Civil Engineering profession.

4.     The Society is then broken down into 10 Geographic Regions, each with its own set of Governors. The Governors provide input to ASCE’s Board of Direction.

5.     Most Regions contain several states, and many states, or portions thereof, have formed their own Section within the Region.   For instance, the Texas Section is located within Region 6 of ASCE, which also includes the New Mexico and Oklahoma Sections.  Each Section has its own constitution, bylaws and officers.

6.     Many Sections have been further subdivided into Branches to better serve members within specific metropolitan areas or population centers.  For instance, in the Texas Section, there are 16 Branches, located regionally by the cities and counties that make each Branch.  The Dallas Branch is made up of 8 counties, and our members reside within the jurisdictional boundaries of these 8 counties surrounding the City of Dallas.

7.     Student Chapters have also been formed within each Section – these are primarily located at universities that have engineering programs related to civil engineering, and they form a bond between each respective university and ASCE.  The Texas Section has 13 Student Chapters.

8.     The Texas Section currently sponsors two meetings per year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall – the meeting location rotates each year among various cities in order to effectively represent all regions of the State.  The Spring Meeting was held this year Bryan/College Station from April 27 – 30, and was well-attended by ASCE Members from around the state and region.
