2011 G.B. Mann Scholarship Winners Announced

The 2011 G.B. Mann Scholarships have been awarded! This year we are pleased to award three (3) $2,000 scholarships to deserving high school seniors. The Dallas Branch received a total of 19 applications from outstanding civil engineering prospects. The top three recipients that were selected are Phuong Phan, Josef Zapletel and Anna Kristine Larsen. These students were judged by a team of four civil engineers based upon academic success, financial need, extracurricular activities, two letters of recommendation, and an essay topic, entitled, “How Civil Engineering will Help Me Make an Impact”.

Phuong Phan of Arlington, TX is planning to attend Texas A&M University in College Station. She was a student at Juan Seguin High School with a 4.0 GPA. Phuong is not only talented at math and science, but she was a featured artist at the Super Bowl to create work for the Super Bowl Charity Auction. She mentors “at risk” children and volunteers at the Arlington Museum of Art. Phuong received the TxDOT Conditional Grant award to pursue a civil engineering degree. She wrote in her essay “As a person of intellect, I know that safety and efficiency cannot be overlooked. As an artist, I know the integrity of the design should not be sacrificed. If I were to be environmentally conscious in how structures are built and maintained, I can make an impact at the site as well as on a global level…”

Josef Zapletel was a high school student at the School of Science and Engineering Magnet in DISD. He was involved in chess club, band, National Honor Society and multiple advanced placement (AP) classes. Josef will attend Texas A&M University in College Station in the fall. In his own words, Josef wrote, “Civil engineering is a career that will allow me to make a positive impact while being immersed in an area of work that I will thoroughly enjoy”. We look forward to welcoming Josef and his great spirit in the civil engineering community. 

Anna Kristine will attend Texas Tech University in the fall. She is from Dallas, TX and attended W.T. White High School. Kristine was number two (2) in her class ranking and was involved in numerous activities such as yearbook, swim team, Spanish National Honor Society and volleyball. Her high school AP Calculus teacher said, “Kristine is gifted, hard-working student with great natural math abilities and a passion for learning”.  We wish Kristine the best of luck in her pursuits in the civil engineering profession.
