KRLD has a “Christmas is for Caring” program supporting the Denton State School (DSS). The DSS is a residential facility housing over 600 people, with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. The majority of the people who live at the DSS have severe and profound retardation, and over half the population require powerchairs or wheelchairs to get around the campus. Residents of the DSS move about the campus freely, without restrictions. This is their home and many live there nearly all of their lives. Most of the residents are adults with very simple Christmas needs.

The Dallas Branch Members are informed to consider participating in this program by collecting money to buy gifts for some of the residents at the school. Last year we raised $1,557. To date, the Dallas Branch ASCE Members have given approximately $8,868 in donations! The money was pledged to hair dryers, mirrors, blankets, puzzles, coloring books, radios, watches, arts & crafts, buy board games, electric razors, make-up kits, manicure sets, night gowns, electric toothbrushes, cameras, reading lamps, coin purses, DVD players, and pictures. We have several options of how to use the money we raise. The deadline for collecting the money is December 16, 2011.

Would you consider personally giving a small donation? Quinn Spann, P.E., a past-president (97-98) of the Branch, has initiated the efforts since 2003 to assist DSS. He will set up a table for your contributions at the next three ASCE meetings. You can also contact him at 972-628-3134 or by email [email protected] . If you would like to mail your donation you can send it to Quinn Spann, HNTB, 5910 W. Plano Parkway, Suite 200, Plano, Texas 75093. Make checks payable to “Denton State School” and make a note that it is for the Dallas Branch-ASCE Christmas project.
