Recap & Highlights of TX ASCE Section Meeting in San Antonio – April 2012

The Board of Directors met on April 18, 2012 and discussed/or approved the following:

A.      SAVE THE DATE!   ASCE Texas Section Fall 2012 Conference, Construction Institute Annual Summit, and the International Conference for Sustainable Design, Engineering and Construction to Fort Worth, Texas November 7–10, 2012 at The Worthington Renaissance Fort Worth Hotel, Fort Worth, Texas --- “Where the Centennial Begins” 
 
B.      Fort Worth Fall 2012 Conference Budget/Schedule/Programapproved. Over 240 abstracts have been submitted for this conference.
 
C.      Email blast about Spring 2013 Corpus Christi Conference for Technical Papers Abstract will be coming soon. If you are interested or have questions contact VP Technical, Bob Pierry ([email protected]).
 
D.     Technology /Younger Members Committee /Communications Manager Kathryn Alvarez are taking initiatives with website, social networking, video production.
E.       Student Video Contest “What Floats Your Boat?” started at SanAntonio Conference and will end at the next spring conference in Corpus Christi for 2013 Centennial Celebration. Prize money will be awarded.
 

F.       Task Committee for committee restructure was approved. Eliminating overlap and streamlining chair/committee roles. The recommendation was approved by the board.   Jack Furlong and I will be available to discuss the committee restructuring that was made.  

1.    Elimination of the following committees:

a.  Engineering Management and Business Practices

b.  Public Relations and Professional Image

c.  Continuing Professional and Career Development

d.  Public Information

e.  Intra?society Relations Committee (fyi – done at ExCOM 1/5/12)

2.    Combining the three related Residential Foundation committees, (Residential Foundations Oversight,
Foundation Investigation & Design, and Residential Foundation Evaluation, and Repair) into a single committee. Internally this committee can be organized to address thespecific subject areas, but in order to simplify the structure, asingle committee handles all Residential Foundation issues.

3.      Differentiate the Past President’s committees (ie separate Standing committees from Task Committees)

4.    Combine the three Centennial committees (Centennial, Centennial Corpus, and Centennial Dallas) into a single Centennial committee. Internally this committee can be organized to address the specific subject areas, but in order to simplify the structure, a single committee handles all Residential Foundation issues. Move single committee to a Task Committee of the Past President.

5.    Eliminate redundant Communication & Technology (org chart shows this committee twice)

6.    Convert Government Affairs and Public Affairs Grant Applicationto a Standing Committee (from a task committee).

7.    Convert Infrastructure Report Card from a Standing Committee to a Task Committee

8.    Re?create/ re?design the Organization chart to have a more attractive presentation. Consider two organizational chart presentation: 1) offices and committees shown without names; 2) Names of officers and Committee Chairs shown on org chart. Only chairman’s name is shown on org chart; not assistant chairs, etc.
 
G.     Centennial Committee – Centennial Logo, Branch logos finished.  Sponsorship packets to be distributed to companies, individuals shortly.
 

H.      The Awards Luncheon had Keynote Speaker Henry Cisneros, Presentation of Best of Spring and Fall 2011 Sessions, and Honors and Student Awards recognized.
