Topic: Hollow Structural Sections (HSS) Overview: Join the Structural Evolution

August 13, 2012, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

This presentation is an ideal way to re-introduce attendees to the basics of HSS and its capabilities. Covering topics such as manufacturing and fabrication processes, attributes and strengths, best uses and opportunities, design aids and software, architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) and newest trends in designing with HSS. Key learning includes:

  • A refresher on the basics of HSS often only touched upon in other learning opportunities
  • The value of HSS as a structural component, including newest trends
  • The value of HSS as an architecturally important element, especially when using AESS
  • Design aids and software to assist in the use of HSS

Presenters:

Mark Bula, HSS Director, has extensive experience in the steel industry, holding management, sales and marketing positions with National Steel, Nucor and SeverCorr Corporation for the past 20 years. As HSS Director, Mark is responsible for all of the activities of The Steel Tube Institute’s HSS Committee including budgeting, programs, technical support, promotions, marketing and marketing communications.

Sam Rubenzer, P.E., S.E., Technical Advisor, has over 14 years experience in structural engineering, including his current position as owner of FORSE Consulting, a structural engineering firm located in Eau Claire, Wisconsin that offers design, consulting and other support services to architects and engineers. As a technical advisor to the HSS Committee of The Steel Tube Institute, Sam works to educate architects and engineers on the many benefits of HSS.
