President’s Message - September 2012

Posted by jen on 09/04/2012 12:00 am  /   President's Message

Thank you to our Younger Members Alison Smith, Matt Ludwig, Kayla Lorentz, and Kristin Green for our August meeting.   If you attended the meeting, you know how smoothly it went.  What you may not know is that a fair amount of behind-the-scenes preparation and scheduling went into that monthly meeting.  In addition, Alison organized and ran our August Board Meeting, which included discussions of several complex topics such as the Branch’s involvement with the North Texas Land/Water Sustainability Form, 2012/2013 officer nominations, and potential modifications to our Branch bylaws.  Keeping us all focused is not an easy job, and Alison showed she has the skill and patience for this type of thing.

Our younger members are an important part of our Branch, our Society, and our profession and their career development is something that should be promoted.   Therefore, we have scheduled Anthony Fasano, P.E., with Powerful Purpose Associates to speak at our technical session following our November meeting.   Anthony is a civil engineer, ASCE member, and author of a book titled: “Engineer Your Own Success: 7 Key Elements to Creating an Extraordinary Engineering Career.” I have talked to Anthony a few times and believe that this will be of interest to many of us regardless of whether we are younger members.   More information will be provided as the date approaches.

Regarding nominations, Faisal Syed, our Branch Nominations Chair, announced a slate of officers at the August Meeting.   This slate included:

    - Sean P. Merrell, P.E. - President,
    - Kristin Green, P.E. - President Elect
    - Angela Matthews, P.E. - Vice President
    - Mir Ali, P.E. - Secretary
    - Anu Kancherla, P.E. - Treasurer
    - Edward Penton, P.E. - Technical Director
    - Alison Smith, P.E. - Branch Director
    - Brad Hernandez, P.E. - Texas Section Director

I encourage you to vote by either electronic ballot (a notice has been sent out) or by paper ballot at the September meeting.
See you at our next meeting on Monday, September 10, 2012.

Douglas L. Smith, P.E.
President
ASCE Dallas Branch, 2011-2012
