URGENT: Volunteers Needed
FUTURE CITY JUDGING AND COORDINATOR OPPORTUNITIES

The Future City Competition – sponsored by National Engineers Week – is designed to inspire 6-8th grade students about engineering by challenging them to solve the real-world problems associated with building a livable city of the future. Hundreds of North Texas students will be working hard from October through January on their city concepts.

Judges Needed – We need about 100 engineers and technical professionals to volunteer their time and expertise in judging student designs, models, and presentations. Opportunities range from judging simulated city designs and essays – which can be done from the comfort of your own computer at your own pace (Dec - Jan) and interacting with the students as you judge models and presentations on the day or the competition January 26th at UT Arlington. Spread the word, enlist your colleagues, and register online athttps://www.dfwfuturecity.org/part_vols.html. For more information, contact Richard Reppert, [email protected].

Special Awards – We also need sponsors for special awards that promote the particular interest of your organization or company and increase the opportunities for every student to be a winner. For more information or to sign-up, contact Jean Eason, [email protected]

Event Coordinators – It’s not too soon to volunteer to help out the day of the competition. There’s a lot to do to make sure everything runs smoothly. Register online at https://www.dfwfuturecity.org/part_vols.html or contact Jean Eason,[email protected]

BACKGROUND:
The Future City Competition is the nation's largest not-for-profit engineering education program. Its purpose is to encourage students to pursue a technical career, to address important environmental issues in our world, and to realize their vision of a city of the future. The winner of our regional event will go on to compete in Washington, DC during National Engineers Week. All of it is possible only through the combined efforts of volunteers and sponsors.

The students are challenged in a series of fun, hands-on applications to present their unique set of solutions to the real-world problems of creating a livable city. To do so, they will adopt the principles of every branch of engineering to support their assertions. Each competing team is asked to first generate a computerized design of a future city, then build a scale model of that city using as many recycled materials as possible.

This year’s challenge is “RETHINK RUNOFF: Design Clean Solutions to Manage Stormwater Pollution.” The students must research and write a paper discussing a stormwater runoff issue in their future city and imagining ways to manage the issue and maintain a clean water supply.

However you decide to help us, we thank you for your consideration. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please visit the official web site athttp://www.dfwfuturecity.org to learn more on how you and your organization can make a difference to the next generation of engineers.
