Education Chair Update

The Educational Committee is back in full swing with our annual school outreach events starting up.  On Sunday, November 4th, ASCE will be hosting a booth at the Coppell High School Engineering Fair.  This fair will be attended by over 2000 high school students and parents from throughout the Metroplex.  ASCE will be on hand to promote our profession, and encourage kids to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering.  We are looking for energetic Branch members to assist at the booth for anywhere from one hour to all 4 hours of the event.  Volunteers will stand at the booth and answer questions about Civil Engineering, college life, and what ASCE does for its members.  Volunteering is also a great way to get your PDH’s!  Please contact Matt Ludwig, ASCE Dallas Branch Education Chair, at [email protected] if you would like to help out.

The Educational Committee has two more exciting opportunities coming up for volunteers to assist with our Branch’s outreach activities!  
On Friday, November 16, we will be helping the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at in an event at the UT-Dallas campus which will involve helping Middle and High School students build models of irrigation systems.  Students will have 30 minutes to design, build and test a water irrigation system under several constraints.  This activity will teach students to follow the engineering design process and build a single entry system that delivers water evenly to two separate locations three feet away.  We have two different shifts for helpers.  Since this event is during work day, lunch will be provided for helpers of either shift!

Where: University of Texas at Dallas, 800 West Campbell Road, Richardson, Texas 75080

When: Friday, November 16, either 11:00-12:30 or 2:15-3:45 (or both), lunch provided

On Friday, December 14, we will present at the Ben Milam Elementary School Career Day.  We will show the students what we do as Civil Engineers, and encourage them to pursue the field with some hands on activities.  We will present at the school between 8:30-11:30 AM; if you can only make it for an hour, that will work too!  Milam Elementary is located in the Uptown Dallas area.
