Texas Section Centennial Celebration

As the New Year begins we will be looking for ways to celebrate 2013 as the Centennial Anniversary of the Texas Section of ASCE.  The Centennial will be celebrated at both the Spring Conference in Corpus Christi and the Fall Conference in Dallas.  The theme of the spring conference is “From Good Roads to Sustainable Infrastructure- a Century of Progress” as we look back at the last century of civil engineering in Texas.  The theme of the fall conference in Dallas will then look into the future with a theme of “Sparking Innovation for the Next Century.”

Throughout the year we will have specific themes relating to Civil engineering for each month of the year starting in January.  In January we will focus on Government relations as we look into our infrastructure report card and pay attention to the challenges that exist in building, operating and maintaining our infrastructure.

Outside of our typical monthly meetings, there will be many other opportunities throughout the year on a state and branch level to participate and celebrate the past 100 years.  We are currently planning a student video contest titled, “World without a Civil Engineer”.  This will give students a chance to display what roles civil engineers play in creating our communities.  There will also be a geo-caching event revolving around state monuments, a Centennial Habitat for Humanity house and many other events.

I look forward to the next year’s celebrations and hope that all of our members will take part in the festivities.

Thank you,

Colin Blankenship
