President's Message - December 2012

Howdy!! What a great November meeting speaker we had withMr. Timothy McKay from DART. It was also great to visit with some of our friends from the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), and to honor those veterans who have served.  We have a great program lined up for this month withLesley Schwalje, P.E. from HNTB speaking about the Dallas Levee project.

As a reminder, we are offering the opportunity for firms to sponsor our meetings in 2013.  This helps your Branch with operating expenses and it provides your firm with the opportunity to spread the word about all the exciting projects your firms are involved with.  We are also offering opportunities to be a website/newsletter sponsor. These sponsorships help support the hosting of the website (which is also used to generate the newsletters). Sponsorship details for both are available on the website, or you can contact me.

The Communication Committee has set up social media for our members use.  We now have a Facebook page, a Twitter account, a Google + account and a Linked-In account for the Dallas Branch.  Please feel free to sign up to get updates and information from the Dallas Branch.

Our December meeting will be our annual Holiday event, which will feature a brief dessert gathering after the meeting.  This will provide you with an opportunity to mingle and network with your colleagues and to debate your choice for who will get the Heisman Trophy (my vote is for Johnny “Football” Manziel –WHOOP!).  In addition, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the Denton State Supported Living Center (Denton State School) Christmas is for Caring program that is coordinated by Quinn Spann each year.  Please note that there will not be a technical session after the December luncheon, but these will begin again in January 2013.

Last, as we approach this holiday season and a new year, we should all take the time to reflect on what our members have accomplished over the past year and what we have waiting for us in 2013. The Honors Committee is calling on you to nominate your colleagues and mentors for the 2013 Outstanding Engineer of the Year and 2013 Outstanding Young Engineer of the Year. There are a number of National Younger Member awards as well as the Mead Paper that is also available for our Younger Members to participate in. As we look towards 2013, we have a lot going on including Future Cities and Engineers Week in February and the Centennial Celebration. Hopefully, our members have started to make arrangements for proclamations for our Centennial year to be presented at local City Council meetings. And don’t forget about the upcoming Spring Centennial Conference in Corpus Christi. This is sure to be one of many great events for next year.

Happy holidays and see you on December 10.
