President's Message - May 2020

Jennifer Smith

Dear Dallas Branch Members:

Every year ASCE Dallas sets aside the month of May as Younger Member Month. The goal of Younger Member Month is to celebrate our Branch’s Younger Members while also challenging them with the duties and responsibilities that are typically handled by the President and other board members. For those of you that don’t know, the Younger Member designation is bestowed upon our members who are 35 years of age and under. This was a great opportunity for me when I was a Younger Member to get experience that I am now using as the President.  We have decided that we will postpone this, as well as the CE Clubs joining us to a later date when we have an in-person meeting.

We’ve already received a few G.B. Mann Scholarship applications.  In the next few weeks we will begin reviewing them for the Dallas ASCE scholarship. The scholarship applications are due on May 15th, so encourage any high school senior you know who will be going into Civil Engineering to apply.  They can get the application at

Joining the virtual meeting this month will be similar to last month, as it will be hosted on YouTube.  The meeting will be online and free.  The link will be sent out beforehand and will go live on Monday, May 11th at noon.  For the upcoming meeting we’ll have Kent Collins, P.E., Director of Public Works for the City of Coppell to speak on the City of Coppell’s Response to Covid-19.  We will have one of our technical presentations this month, so look for the announcement of it.

You should see a link in the description of the presentation which will take you to a google form.  This is how we will know who to send PDH Certificates to.  On the form there is a code that you need to type in to receive the certificate, it will be mentioned at the end of the meeting.  If you have any trouble with it let us know at [email protected] or in any of our social media platforms.  If you have any additional questions you want to ask our speaker please put those in the comments section and we will send those to him and send out the responses.

We will more than likely be having another virtual meeting next month, but watch your email for information.

I look forward to the May meeting, and hope to see everyone soon!

Yours in service,

Julie A. Jones, PE, CFM
