President's Message - February 2020
Dear Dallas Branch Members: There were so many great STEM events that occurred in January. I wanted to start by thanking all of the members who volunteered to support both the North Texas Regional Future Cities Competition and the Dallas ISD Stem Expo over the last couple weeks. Those kids make me excited that there are so many future engineers, and the amazing things they think up, plan, and accomplish at their ages. If you have never volunteered at one of these events, I encourage you to in the future. One of these opportunities will be at the Perot museum during E-Week. During the week of February 16 - 22, the nation will celebrate the engineering profession during national Engineers Week. This year’s theme nationally is “Be a Pioneer of Progress” and encourages all engineers to give every child an engineering experience and an opportunity to meet an engineer. The Dallas Branch of ASCE will be awarding our annual recipients of Engineer of the Year (EOY) and Young Engineer of the Year (YEOY). The winners of these award were nominated by their peers and were judged by the honors committee. Congratulations to the 2020 EOY Ed Penton, PE and 2020 YEOY Phillip Alcorn, PE. Both Ed and Phillip have been done great things both in their careers and within ASCE. Please see the TSPE website (http://www.dallastspe.com/engineers-week.html) if you would like any information about their awards luncheon. This event will take place February 18th at the Plano Center and will allow multiple engineering societies to award their respective winners of EOY and YEOY. For the upcoming February 10th meeting we’ll have Debbie Neubert, PE, Project Manager at Jacobs speaking on Klyde Warren Park 2.0 - Expanding the Heart of Dallas. We will have our two technical presentations scheduled around our main lunch meeting for January. Our AM technical session, led by the Structural Institute (SI), will be given by James T. Brown, P.E and Courtney Webb, P.E. on Klyde Warren Park Deck Structure. Our PM technical session, led by the Engineers Without Borders North Texas Professional Chapter (EWB-USA-NTP), will be given by Manuel Calderon, EIT at Jacobs on All About EWB-USA. I look forward to seeing everyone at the February meeting! Yours in service, Julie A. Jones, PE, CFM President
