Volunteers needed for DISD STEM EXPO Bridge Building Competition

Posted by webmaster on 01/03/2020 12:00 am  /   Education Outreach

WHAM AND BAM! Those were the sounds of popsicle bridges being broken (for science)! ASCE last week had a few members stop by the H. B. Bell School Support Service Center to practice run a few bridges for the upcoming STEM EXPO Bridge Exhibition, January 18th! The elementary students' challenge is to make a bridge out of popsicle sticks to withstand a weight stress test, and the goal is to have the most efficient bridge. The students have five minutes to put as much weight as the bridge can hold until it breaks.  Some students were hesitant to break their very own creations, however we reassured students that testing is always essential in engineering!  One bridge held 44 times it's own weight. We all gave our feedback, so the kids can be ready and prepared for the competition in January!
