Woodrow Wilson CE Club December 2019 Update

The second presentation in the 2019-2020 partnership between Woodrow Wilson High School and ASCE Dallas took place Wednesday, October 30th. Bradford Russell and Ram Thapa from BR Architects & Engineers spoke to the young engineering students and addressed their questions about architecture and civil engineering. Amongst the discussed topics were: prominent architects and engineers, licensing of professional engineers and architects, and the relationship between architects and engineers.

Once the presentation had concluded, the students were tasked with bridging a one foot gap using only small marshmallows and toothpicks. Several truss bridges were successful, much to the delight of instructor Daniel Garrison.

Class visits are scheduled every three weeks, with presenters varying from local civil engineering students to practicing civil engineers. Presenting volunteers are welcome.

If you are interested in presenting to the Woodrow Wilson CE Club please contact Carlos Leyva at [email protected]

Hillcrest High School CE Club December 2019 Update

On Friday November 22, 2019 civil engineering and architecture students at the University of Texas At Arlington had the opportunity to share their college experience with Hillcrest Hight School students. Letty Duarte, Naomi Borrego, Olivia Mitchell, and Ally Auger presented on their experience and extra circular activities that are just as important as attending class. They covered the involvement in ASCE, Chi Epsilon, Steel Bridge Competition, Concrete Canoe, and Student Symposium. The students were engaged and asked questions about being course load, attending monthly ASCE and other organization meetings, and how to become more involved. The UTA students also covered the importance of networking and working internship positions in different fields to expand their knowledge.

The next class presentation is scheduled in January 24th, 2020. If you would like to share your experience in your field, and reach out Hilcrest High School students to make a difference please contact Farwa Sultan at [email protected]
