Congrats to our very own Branch Director and SMU Student Chapter Advisor, Jennifer Smith, for being recognized at the Society level as one of two winners of the 2019 ASCE Outstanding Practitioner Advisor Award! As an alumna of Southern Methodist University (SMU), located right here in Dallas, assuming the role of SMU ASCE Student Chapter advisor was a natural fit for Jennifer. She immediately infused a renewed enthusiasm and sense of direction using her experience as a former student of the university, her professional connections, and personal drive. Because of Jennifer’s efforts, several SMU civil engineering students now attend the monthly ASCE Dallas Branch luncheons and the on-campus programming is thriving with regular guest speakers from a variety of local civil engineering firms. We have no doubt that the ASCE Dallas Branch and the civil engineering students at SMU have greatly benefitted from Jennifer’s service!

Here are some words of support and encouragement from 2019 SMU Student Chapter President Ola Wenno:

Jennifer takes it upon herself to provide exceptional support to the ASCE SMU chapter. During times of leadership transitions, she quickly becomes acquainted with the new officers. She offers information, recommendations, and direction for our chapter. Her excellent work is best illustrated by the ASCE Dallas-ASCE SMU Mentorship program. Jennifer organized and helped to establish the program this year. The program allows students to explore potential career paths and create connections with civil engineering professionals in the area. Jennifer recruited mentors and paired each mentee to mentors based on their field of interest. Moreover, she has recruited speakers for our chapter meetings and given promotional resources to market ASCE at SMU.

Congrats Jennifer!
