President's Message - March 2013

Howdy!!  Please join me in congratulating Faisal Syed, P.E., PTOE and Julie Jones, P.E., CFM for winning the ASCE Dallas Branch Engineer and Young Engineer of the Year Awards during the Engineer’s Week Awards Lunch on February 21. These two individuals exemplify the great work Civil Engineers do in our community, profession and within ASCE.

We had a great presentation last month with Kyndra Johnson, who is the PreK-12 STEM Science Coordinator for the Lancaster Independent School District.  This month we have a topic and speaker that goes along with our monthly Centennial Theme of Civil Engineering History.  Mr. John H. Slate is the archivist for the City of Dallas and will be talking to us about Dealey Plaza and the Triple Underpass: Building the Front Door of Dallas.  We also have an excellent opportunity after the lunch program to hear from Dave Davis, P.E. on a presentation called “Dallas over One Engineer’s Lifetime”.  Thank you to our monthly meeting sponsor LCA Environmental, Inc.

ASCE Dallas will be recognizing the newest ASCE Life Members for 2012 and 2013 in the Dallas Branch at the upcoming branch meeting. The ASCE Life Membership is given to individuals that have made a lifetime commitment to ASCE and the civil engineering profession through consistent membership and involvement.  Please join us in congratulating the newest Life Members in the ASCE Dallas Branch when we formally recognize these individuals at the Dallas Branch meeting on March 11.

The next monthly centennial webinar is set for March 12 at noon. The title of this webinar is “Learning from the Past: Tropical Storm Hermine in Williamson County”.  We have also been working on obtaining Centennial Proclamations from many of our local Dallas area cities and counties.  Take a look at theproclamations we have received so far.  This month we received the Centennial Proclamation from the City of Dallas.  Thanks to all those members that participated in this event at City Hall.

Don’t forget: The Communication Committee has set up social media sites for our members to get updates and information from the Dallas Branch. 

Mark your calendars now for the 2013 DFW ASCE Golf Tournament on April 29 at Tour 18 in Flower Mound.  This golf tournament benefits the G.B. Mann Dallas Branch Scholarship fund.  Register today!!  And don’t forget registration is now open for the upcoming Spring Centennial Conference in Corpus Christi.
