February 2019 Volunteer Updates

Posted by webmaster on 02/01/2019 12:00 am  /   Announcement

This past month has been a busy one for our volunteers.  We’ve done everything from STEM nights to EXPOs.  See below for more details

On the January 17th, two of our members attended the Harrington Elementary STEM night.  We got to meet a lot of kids excited about engineering and used this as a chance to introduce them to Civil Engineering by having them design a bridge with just one piece of paper.

Thanks to Isamar Escobar for helping me out!

On January 26th, two of our members saw the future of infrastructure at the Future Cities Competition.  In this competition, middle school students learn about several different forms of engineering by designing their own “City of the Future” first in SimCity and then in a physical model.  In today’s event, we judged the models.  If the models give any indication of our future, it looks like wind and solar are here to stay!

Thanks to Joseph Gerke for helping me out!

On February 2nd, five of our members helped Dallas ISD host a bridge building competition at their annual DISD Stem EXPO.  Here, elementary, middle and high school teams compete to build the most weight efficient bridge out of popsicle sticks (elementary) or balsa wood.  Several of the bridges held over 100 pounds!

Thanks to Jennifer Smith, Jonathan Brower, Dallas May and Tim Abrams for helping me out!

If you’re interested in volunteering for events like these please scan the QR code below.  We’re celebrating E-week by hosting an activity at the Perot Museum on 2/19, 2/20, and 2/21.  We need 12 volunteers at a minimum and we’re currently sitting at 5.

Thanks,
