Earth Day 2014

Earth Day 2014 was a great success!  ASCE Dallas had an outdoor booth set up all weekend at the annual celebration in Fair Park.  Two activities were organized for all our booth visitors, both of which helped illustrate how civil engineers work with water on a daily basis.  Visitors were challenged to build their own water filter out of cotton balls, sponges, gravel, activated charcoal, and coffee filters.  Individual filters were then tested by pouring a cup of “contaminated water” through them.  Bernoulli’s equation was also demonstrated with the use of a small tank of water and various sizes of plastic tubing.  The hope was to give the general public and young students a greater appreciation for what civil engineers do to move and treat the water they use everyday!  More pictures from Earth Day 2014 can be found here.  Thank you to all the ASCE members that volunteered over the weekend!  Your passion and dedication to the civil engineering profession is what makes ASCE so great.
