President's Message - January 2021

Julie Jones

Happy New Year Dallas Branch Members!

We have lots of new and exciting programs that are kicking off in 2021, and I am extremely proud of our Branch officers and committee chairs for coming up with forward-thinking and creative ways to keep our Branch active and full of benefits for our members.

The Younger Member Committee is starting “The Bridge” program this month. “The Bridge” is intended to help Student Chapter members make the jump into the professional world and to help develop and retain our Younger Member membership base. The January program for “The Bridge” will include a panel discussion centered around studying for, taking, and passing (or bouncing back from failing) the PE exam. Please consider attending this valuable event!

We have also recently entered into a partnership with Dallas College where we will be providing resources, guidance, and opportunities for students within their STEM Institute. We currently have outreach and mentorship programs in place at the high school and university levels, but the Dallas Branch has recognized a unique gap in our outreach program to inspire and recruit students that are starting off their education at two-year institutions. I am excited for this new sector in our already strong outreach department, and I look forward to seeing where this partnership with Dallas College will go in the future.

Thank you to all our members who watched our December virtual meeting and donated $10 for their PDH certificates. From these PDH certificate proceeds, we were able to donate $700 each to the G.B. Mann Scholarship Fund and North Texas Food Bank. This month we will be splitting the proceeds from our PDH certificates evenly between the ASCE Dallas G.B. Mann Scholarship and the Dallas ISD STEM Activities Department.

As we move forward into 2021, I would encourage you all to look for ways you can get more involved with the Branch outside of just attending our (virtual for the time being) monthly meetings. Our leadership is hard at work setting up volunteering opportunities with the Future City Competition, the Dallas Independent School District, and Dallas College. We are planning our annual golf tournament benefitting the G.B. Mann Scholarship fund, and we are also looking for corporate Branch sponsors to help support all these programs. I can assure you that we will be faithful stewards of your time and money as you volunteer for and sponsor the Dallas Branch. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at any time if you have any questions on how you can best get involved with and contribute to our Branch.
